Prof Jean de Leval

Professor de Leval obtained his medical, surgery and obstetrics degree in 1968 from the University of Liege. He began his career as an assistant in the Department of Urology at the same university (1968-1977). In 1974, he was awarded a Urology Specialist degree. Three years later, he was appointed as First Assistant, then Supervisor in the Department of Urology until 1984. Qualified to lecture at the University of Liège in 1983, he was appointed Professor of Urology and Head of the Department of Urology. He remained there from 1984-2009.

Prof. de Leval is known for his research on the striated urethral sphincter and his inventions. In fact, he invented a “Novel surgical technique for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence: transobturator vaginal tape inside-out.” The technique and instrumentation are patented and the set is marketed by Gynecare® TVT-Obturator Device since 2004. In the same year, he developed the TVT ABBREVO, which became available in 2010. In 2007, he developed “The inside-out trans-obturator sling: A novel surgical technique for the treatment of male urinary incontinence.” The European patent was granted in 2012 and the device has been marketed since 2014 under the name of TOM-Sling.

Amongst his many qualifications and functions, Prof. de Leval has been a Consultant in Urology at the Hôpital de Bastogne (1974-2014), President of the French Language Neuro-Urological Study Group (Groupe d'étude neuro-urologique de langue française , GENULF, 1980-1985), President of the 15th Congress of the International French-speaking Society of Urodynamics (Société internationale francophone d'urodynamique, SIFUD) in 1991 and President of the Belgian Society of Urology (1991-1993). Since 1983, Prof. de Leval has been a humanitarian physician (Conakry, Guinea, and Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo) and since 2009, an Emeritus Professor and Consultant in Urology at the University Hospital of Liège.

Author of 140 publications in national and international journals, approximately 10 medical films and about 10 book chapters, particularly about male urinary incontinence, Prof. de Leval is also an active member of the following national and international scientific societies:
